Privacy Policy
ItemMap ("ItemMap," "we," "us") helps you build a searchable inventory of your physical spaces. You point your phone's camera at a room; we reconstruct the space in 3D and automatically identify and catalog the items in it. Doing that requires processing imagery of your home or other spaces, so we want to be clear about exactly what we collect, what we do with it, and what we don't do.
This policy covers the ItemMap mobile apps, the web application at app.itemmap.app, and the website at itemmap.app.
ItemMap is currently in beta. Features and data practices may evolve as the product develops. We will update this policy when they do.
Information We Collect
Account information
You sign in to ItemMap with a third-party identity provider (currently Google Sign-In). When you do, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo. We do not receive or store your Google password.
Scan data
Scanning is the core of ItemMap, and it is camera-based. When you actively start a scan:
- Video: the app streams video from your camera to our servers, where it is stored and processed. Recording happens only during a scan you start, and scans are limited in length.
- Audio: the scan stream may include audio picked up by your device's microphone while you are scanning. We use the camera stream to identify objects, not to analyze conversations.
- Motion and camera data: device camera pose (position and orientation) and camera characteristics, which we need to reconstruct the space in 3D.
- Derived data: from your scans we generate 3D reconstructions (point clouds and models), still frames, cropped images of detected items, and item records (names, descriptions, categories, and estimated values) produced with the help of AI systems.
Content you add
Inventory information you create or edit in the app: item names and notes, locations, zones, containers, and organizational structure.
Device and usage information
Technical and usage information needed to run and improve the service: device type and operating system, app version, log and diagnostic data, crash reports, performance measurements, and product analytics (how you use the app, such as screens viewed, features used, and session information).
Beta signup
If you join our waitlist at itemmap.app, we collect your email address and any use-case notes you choose to share.
How We Use Information
- To provide the service: reconstructing your spaces in 3D, identifying and cataloging items, estimating item values, syncing your inventory across devices, and making it searchable.
- To identify and appraise items: images and short descriptions derived from your scans are processed by AI models, and item details may be looked up against public web sources and marketplaces to find product matches and price estimates.
- To operate and improve ItemMap: debugging, measuring performance, improving the accuracy of scanning and item identification, and developing new features.
- To communicate with you: service updates, beta communications, and responses to your support requests.
What We Don't Do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not show ads, and we do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
- We do not use your microphone outside of active scans.
- Your inventory is private to your account. No other user, partner business, or other organization can see it unless you explicitly share it.
How We Share Information
We share data only with service providers that help us run ItemMap, and only as needed to provide the service:
- Cloud hosting and storage (e.g., Amazon Web Services), where scan data, reconstructions, and your inventory are stored and processed.
- AI model providers, which process images and text derived from your scans to identify and describe items. These providers are used as processors for our requests; we do not permit them to use your data for advertising.
- Analytics providers, which help us understand how the app is used so we can improve it. They process usage data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
- Search and marketplace data services, used to look up product information and price estimates for identified items. These lookups use item descriptions and images, not your identity.
- Sign-in and app distribution providers (Google for sign-in and Android distribution, Apple for iOS distribution via TestFlight and the App Store).
- Network relay infrastructure used to transport your encrypted scan stream from your phone to our servers.
We do not volunteer your data to anyone, including government agencies, and we disclose it only when valid legal process requires us to.
If ItemMap is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, this policy will continue to apply to your data until you are told otherwise.
Scanning and Other People
Scans capture whatever is in front of your camera. ItemMap is designed to identify objects, not people. Please be considerate: scan your own spaces or spaces you have permission to scan, and avoid pointing the camera at people during a scan.
Data Retention and Deletion
We keep your data for as long as your account is active so that your inventory remains available to you. You can delete individual scans and items in the app. To delete your account and associated data, email us at hello@itemmap.app and we will process the request promptly. Residual copies may persist in backups for a limited period before being purged.
Security
Scan streams and app traffic are encrypted in transit (including the WebRTC video stream, which is encrypted end-to-end between your device and our servers). Stored data is protected by access controls, and access to production systems is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data with industry-standard measures.
Children's Privacy
ItemMap is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your Rights and Choices
You can access and edit your inventory in the app at any time. You may request a copy of your data, correction of inaccurate data, or deletion of your data by emailing hello@itemmap.app. Depending on where you live (for example, California or the European Economic Area), you may have additional rights under local law, and we will honor valid requests in accordance with those laws. We will never discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
You can also control ItemMap's access to your camera, microphone, and photo library through your device's system settings. Note that scanning requires camera access to function.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the date above, and for material changes we will provide notice.
